Will My Bill Go Up

Data

Asked vs approved

Utilities open rate cases with a request; commissions almost always grant less. This page measures the gap across every decided case we track where both numbers are on the public record. Cite it freely with a link; every row links its docket and sources.

Sample: the rate cases this site tracks (45 states, updated August 29, 2026), not a census of every US docket. Cases that settle without a published residential percent are not in the table, which likely makes commissions look slightly tougher than they are.

Right now, 49 cases are pending; among the 37 with a published or computable dollar figure, the average ask is about $17 a month on a typical bill, topping out at $45 a month. If the historical pattern holds, most of those asks will land lower. The pending list.

How to read this honestly

The requested figure is a negotiating position, so "commissions cut most requests" does not mean households were saved that money; some of the gap was never going to be granted. It also is not padding all the way down: several cases in the table were granted in full or nearly so. The useful lesson for a household reading a "utility seeks 20 percent increase" headline is that the number that matters arrives months later, and it is usually smaller.
