Duke Energy Carolinas asked North Carolina regulators for a 15 percent revenue increase over two years to cover grid investment and load growth from large customers including data centers. Most parties, including Commission Public Staff, reached a settlement in July 2026 cutting that to about 9.5 percent for residential customers over two years (5.9 percent in year one, 3.6 percent in year two), but Attorney General Jeff Jackson refused to sign it, saying it was still too high for families. The North Carolina Utilities Commission has not yet ruled and is expected to issue a final order in late 2026.

What it means for your bill: If the commission approves the settlement as negotiated, a typical 1,000 kWh residential bill would rise about 6.53 dollars a month once new rates take effect; the case is not yet decided.
