Duke Energy Progress asked North Carolina regulators for an 18.1 percent residential rate increase, then settled with Public Staff on a lower figure that the state's own analysis puts at 9.3 percent over two years, about 15.51 dollars more a month, split into about 9.62 dollars starting January 1, 2027 and another 5.89 dollars starting January 1, 2028. Attorney General Jeff Jackson refused to sign the deal, saying Duke's cited 6.8 percent figure understated the true residential impact. State law requires the Utilities Commission to rule by September 20, 2026, or Duke's original 18.1 percent request takes effect automatically.
