Duke Energy Progress asked North Carolina regulators for an 18.1 percent residential rate increase over two years. In July 2026 the company reached a settlement with Commission Public Staff and other parties that would cut the increase to about 6.8 percent over two years, but Attorney General Jeff Jackson refused to sign it, calling it still too costly for families. The North Carolina Utilities Commission has not yet ruled; new rates would begin January 1, 2027 if approved.

What it means for your bill: If approved as settled, the increase works out to about 6.8 percent on a typical residential bill phased in over 2027 and 2028; the case is still pending before the commission.
