Data
Average electric bill by state, 2024 EIA data
Every year the US Energy Information Administration measures this: average residential monthly electricity consumption times the average residential price, for every home a utility serves in the state. That makes it an average across all homes, not a typical one, so a state's number is pulled around by big all-electric houses on one end and small apartments on the other. Your own bill depends on your usage, your heating fuel and your local climate, which is why it can sit well above or below the line for your state below. The last two columns add what the EIA number does not have yet: how many rate cases are pending right now in that state, and what the biggest one would add to a typical bill if approved.

Method: bill, usage and price per kWh are EIA Form 861, Table 5.A, averaged across every residential customer in the state, not a median or typical home. Pending counts and dollar estimates use the same arithmetic as the rest of this site. See the methodology page for how we turn a percentage into a dollar figure.
