Hawaiian Electric and Ulupono Initiative jointly asked the PUC to approve about 170 million dollars a year in added revenue, seeking a two year rate increase of 5 percent on Oahu, 5.8 percent on Hawaii Island and 6.4 percent on Maui and Molokai. By 2028 that would add roughly 11 dollars a month to a typical Oahu bill, about 15 dollars on the Big Island, and about 14 dollars on Maui. The companies have asked the PUC for an interim decision by December 18, 2026 so about 125 million dollars of the increase could start January 1, 2027, with the remaining 45 million dollars phased in January 1, 2028; the PUC's tentative schedule points to a final decision around April 2027. The PUC held six public hearings across the islands between September 22 and October 2, 2026, before the three member commission decides.
