Consumers Energy filed a new electric rate case on June 2, 2026, asking for a 456 million dollar revenue increase, about 9.8 percent more from residential customers, to cover a 12 month period ending April 2028. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed testimony on October 6, 2026 asking the commission to cut the increase by 53 percent and cap Consumers' return on equity at 9.20 percent, well below the 10.25 percent the company requested. If approved as filed, a typical residential bill of about 155 dollars a month would rise by roughly 13 dollars; the Michigan Public Service Commission is expected to decide by April 2027. This case is separate from a longer term supply plan Consumers announced in September 2026 that calls for more than doubling generating capacity by 2040.
What it means for your bill: This is a new, separate request on top of the rate increase that already took effect in May 2026. Michigan's Attorney General is now pushing to cut it by more than half; nothing has been decided yet.
