What it means for your bill
$
Consumers Energy asked Michigan regulators to raise natural gas rates by 240 million dollars a year in a case filed in mid-December 2025. The Michigan Public Service Commission approved 139.2 million dollars of that request on October 15, 2026, a 42 percent cut from the ask, after rejecting costs it called insufficiently justified, including money sought for pipeline integrity work. For a typical residential customer using 75 hundred cubic feet of gas a month, that works out to a 4.33 percent increase, about 3.92 dollars more, effective November 1, 2026.
What it means for your bill: Your Consumers Energy natural gas bill is rising about 3.92 dollars a month starting November 1, 2026. This is separate from the company's pending electric rate case and from a new gas rate case Consumers has said it plans to file by mid-December 2026.

Other Consumers Energy matters
This funds grid hardening work, not data centers; a separate, larger Consumers Energy rate request was already filed for the following year.
This does not change a typical home bill by itself, but it sets the rules meant to stop the cost of new data center power hookups from being spread across every Consumers Energy customer's rate.

If approved as filed, this would be a bigger increase than the 4.1 percent DTE got approved in its last case; MPSC Staff and the state Attorney General both want the increase cut well below what DTE asked for.
