We Energies asked state regulators in March 2025 to create a new rate structure for its biggest electric customers, mainly AI data centers. On April 24, 2026 the Public Service Commission approved the plan but toughened it: a 15 year minimum contract instead of the 10 years the utility wanted, a lower 100 megawatt size threshold, and no more capacity only option, so a data center cannot pay for just part of the power it reserves. We Energies has said data centers are expected to cover billions of dollars in new power plant costs planned for 2027 and 2028.
What it means for your bill: This tariff does not change home electric rates by itself, but it is meant to make large new data centers pay the full cost of the power plants and lines built to serve them instead of spreading those costs across everyone's bill.
