Madison Gas and Electric filed a request with state regulators on July 15, 2026 to create a new tariff specifically for very large customers, the term commonly used for hyperscale data centers, meant to make those customers cover the cost of the grid buildout they require rather than spreading it to homes and small businesses. Cloverleaf Infrastructure, the company that has assembled several Wisconsin data center sites, has moved to intervene in the case. The tariff was still pending before the Public Service Commission as of August 2026.

What it means for your bill: Nothing changes on home bills unless and until this tariff is approved, but its purpose is to keep future data center grid costs off residential rates.
