TVA is a federal agency, not a state regulated utility, so its own board sets rates rather than a public service commission. The TVA board approved a new rate class for data centers on August 20, 2026, including a Capacity Commitment Charge on new or expanding data center loads above 5 MW, roughly 1.5 million dollars per MW paid over 3 to 5 years, taking effect October 1, 2026. TVA says the change keeps data centers from shifting grid buildout costs onto its roughly 10 million residential and business customers; no dollar or percent change to a typical residential bill has been published.
